JOB DESCRIPTION DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY SERVICES 2004-2005 AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL IN ISRAEL 2004-2005
The School shall employ an individual who shall be the DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY SERVICES for the school. His/her term of appointment and salary shall be determined by the school administration as outlined in the salary scale and working conditions as determined by the Board of Education. This is a full-time position with administrative responsibilities assisting elementary and secondary teaching staff, visitors, and to maintain the library as a welcome and efficient learning environment, as well as maintain a supportive and collegial atmosphere with all other AIS faculty and staff.
JOB OBJECTIVE: The Director of Library Services is responsible for coordination and supervision of all library services, including print, electronic, and audio-visual media. Also, to provide instruction support and resources to the elementary and secondary school staff in keeping with the School’s mission and philosophy.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Appropriate Teaching Certificate, 2. Master’s Degree in Library Science. Required 3. Successful previous experience in School Library characterized by cultural diversity and wide-ranging ability levels of student body. 4. Successful teaching experience. 5. Can communicate respectfully and effectively with students, teachers, staff, and parents. 6. Open and broadminded; eclectic in style. 7. Values and appreciates quality teaching and is skilled in communicating that to staff. 8. Guided by a solid philosophy of education which aligns with the school’s mission and philosophy. 9. Clear understanding of curriculum, curriculum development and a variety of instructional methodologies appropriate to the elementary school level. 10. Good listener and articulate speaker and writer. 11. Flexible: able to assess, analyze, and adjust programs accordingly. 12. Communicates enthusiasm and spirit. 13. Committed to personally promoting the library. 14. Ability to work effectively as team leader and team member.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
He/she shall be responsible to the Superintendent and act under his/her direction. The Director Library Services may delegate authority and responsibility to others at his/her discretion but in every instance, he/she is responsible for the responsibilities listed below.

LOCATION: In the library area assisting all parties as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Library Services shall:
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Direct all library services, function, and activities. 2. Develop and implement policies and regulations with regard to library services and materials. 3. Budget and monitor library accounts. 4. Supervise and evaluate other professional, non-professional, and volunteer personnel. 5. Consult with teachers and school administrators to determine needs, services, and programs appropriate to each class and each subject area. 6. Teach research and library skills to students and staff, including use of computer-based resources, including a middle school exploratory course. 7. Select and order all library materials and equipment. 8. Assess needs and plan for future improvements. 9. Perform other teaching duties, as appropriate (see AIS Job Profile; Teacher)
1 COOPERATIVE PLANNING AND TEACHING 1.1 Plan with classroom teachers to integrate information skills and multimedia into curriculum units. 1.2 Cooperatively teach and evaluate selected units with classroom teachers.
2 TEACHER AND CURRICULUM SUPPORT 2.1 Locate resources to support classroom teachers’ instructional needs 2.2 Support the classroom teacher in the development presentation, enrichment and enhancement of curriculum and skills development. 3 INFORMATION AND RESEARCH SKILLS 3.1 Develop with staff a skills continuum. 3.2 Teach students to locate, organize, analyze, and present information using a variety of media.
4 READING PROMOTION 4.1 Encourage students to read for pleasure, as well as for information. 4.2 Provide an inviting environment for reading and/or studying.
5 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 5.1 Keep informed and up-to-date on the most recent technological and instructional resources. 5.2 Develop and maintain technological and instructional skills.
6 LEADERSHIP 6.1 Provide leadership in the implementation of curriculum integration and cooperatively planned programs. 6.2 Participate as an active member of school and staff committees to develop and implement school goals.
7 ADVOCACY AND STAFF RELATIONS 7.1 Demonstrate the essential necessity of the library-resource center program. 7.2 Advocate cooperative planning, curriculum integration and resource-based learning to administrators, teachers, students, parents and the community.
8 FACILITY MANAGEMENT 8.1 Plan and organize efficient use of space, time and resources. 8.2 Maintain and supervise a safe, orderly environment conducive to learning.
9 RESOURCE MANAGEMENT 9.1 Build and maintain a quality collection of materials to support and enrich curricula and programs. 9.2 Make effective use of monetary resources. 9.3 Make effective use of human resources: staff, students, and/or volunteers.
10 NETWORKING 10.1 Network with other schools to share ideas and resources. 10.2 Network with the community, other educational institutions, and government institutions.
11 AUTOMATION: 11.1 Understand and use all of the functions/features of the library's circ/catalog software. 11.2 Be able to troubleshoot problems and converse knowledgeably with tech. support if necessary. 11.3 Understand MARC cataloging rules. 11.4 Understand ways to extract cataloging information from the Internet.
12.RODUCTION 12.1 Should be able to use various word-processing programs, create databases and spreadsheets, use presentation software such as PowerPoint, use any available graphics software (i.e. importing graphics, scanning documents, etc.) and any other software that students use.
13 INFORMATION 13.1 Should be proficient with several online encyclopedias. 13.2 Should be proficient with several online periodical indexes. 13.3 Should be proficient in web searching so that teachers can ask advice about sites (as they do with books). 13.4 Should be able to teach effective search strategies. 13.5 Should be able to teach searchers ways to evaluate online sources (accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, coverage). 13.6 Should offer regular staff training in areas listed above.
14. INTERNET 14.1 Manage a library Web page that helps searchers use online library sources and the Web. 14.2 Be familiar with listservs and newsgroups.
15. LEADERSHIP 15.1 Should serve on school/district technology committees to develop plans for effective policies/procedures/priorities. 15.2 Should be aware of emerging technologies. 15.3 Should have a clear and well articulated philosophy of the uses (and abuses) of technology. 15.4 Works with curriculum committees to facilitate integration of information skills/technologies.
16 Hardware/Network/Software 16.1 Should have an understanding of all library hardware so that he/she can perform simple troubleshooting. 16.2 Should have an understanding of network operations and should be able to perform network administrative functions. 16.3 Should be able to use and manage a library lab. 16.4 Should preview and recommend instructional software. 16.5 Should be able to learn and adapt other technologies/systems (closed-circuit TV, video conferencing, etc.)
AND 17.1 All other duties as required by the Superintendent which are consistent with this position.
WORKING CONDITIONS: In accordance with the current Official Teacher’s Agreement, and the AIS Policies and Procedures for Teachers (K-8; 9-12; K-12), published annually in the Faculty Handbook. The Director of Library Services is required to begin work based on negotiated need. The Director of Library Services is paid a teacher’s salary according to the Agreement, plus a stipend.
